sold / Weymann 12 String c 1908 v2039
Weymann 12-String c 1908  |  SOLD  | (v2039)  We strive to be purveyors of rare and unusual vintage instruments and this Weymann 12-string falls right in line with that goal.  This instrument is one of only two Weymann 12-strings extant.  Weymann is fairly well known in the vintage guitar community as a builder of high quality instruments constructed with choice materials by skilled craftsmen in Philadelphia.  The serial number stamped on the top of the headstock dates this guitar to about 1908, which makes it among the earliest of 12-strings.  Grunewald, Holzapfel and probably Oscar Schmidt were constructing guitars with double-coursed twelve strings, but a 12-string by any of those early makers is quite rare today.

The back and sides are a high grade of Brazilian rosewood.  The ladder-braced top is spruce, with 'rope' binding around the top and sound hole, with the top framed in white celluloid.  The back features a decorative inlaid marquetry strip.  The neck is mahogany, and is carved in a soft 'V'.  The headstock is faced with Brazilian rosewood and features the Weymann Keystone State High Grade gold foil decal.  The serial number 8594 is stamped on top of the headstock.  The fingerboard is ebony with three pearl position dots.  Both the nut and (replacement) bridge are ebony.

The body measures 14 5/8" across at the lower bout.  Scale length is 25 3/16".  The fingerboard measures 1 13/16" across at the nut, and string spacing is 2 3/8" across at the saddle.  The body is 4 3/8" deep at the end pin.

Recent repairs include:  crack repairs along the fingerboard extension; replacement bridge with slightly compensated saddle; several back cracks glued; neck reset; endpin crack through the heel block glued; three holes from a later tailpiece filled.

The guitar is well set up with action set at 5 & 6/64".  The deep body and Brazilian rosewood gives the guitar a bit of oomph, but retains a level of 'sweetness' that a small-bodied 12-string can provide.  It's a pleasure and an inspiration to play ragtime and country blues on this very early example of an acoustic twelve.

Comes with a newer hard case.
