CF Martin 000-28 1929  |   SOLD   |  (v2252)  The Martin 000-28 first appeared in 1902, with very slow sales through its first twenty-five years.  But sales picked up when Martin swithched from the slot-head to solid-head necks in the early 1930s, and the model has been a steady seller ever since.  Players like the 000 size for its balanced tone, quality workmanship and its classic, understated appearance.  This example, built in 1949, comes from a time when Martin moved away from scalloped braces, but continued to use high quality materials and the same workforce that created the coveted herringbone-era Martins.  This guitar is one of one hundred twenty-two 000-28s made in '49.

The back and sides are Brazilian rosewood.  The X-braced top is spruce.  The top and back are bound in b/w/b purfling and white celluloid.  The back features an inlaid purfling strip down the center seam.  The bridge is ebony.  The pickguard is faux tortoise.  The neck is mahogany and carved in the comfortable Martin 'C' shape.  The fingerboard is ebony with multiple pearl position dots.  The headstock is overlaid in Brazilian rosewood and features the gold Martin decal.  The tuners are individual Klusons with enclosed gears.

The body measures 15" across at the lower bout.  Scale length is 25".  The neck measures 1 11/16" across at the nut, and string spacing is 2 3/16" at the saddle.  Action is set at 5 & 6/64".

A number of repairs were done by Brothers Music Shop in Wind Gap, PA (former Martin employees).  The neck was reset; loose pickguard reglued; pickguard crack repaired; install era correct bridge which was made in the Martin factory, essentially Martin NOS; finish touch up from a previous oversized bridge; new bone saddle; some chip out corrected in original bridge plate; refret; installed period correct tuners; corrected tuner holes from previous tuners;  shimmed original nut; dressed end pin hole.  The finish is original with various areas of wear, dings and scratches.

The guitar is now essentially 'original', with period correct tuners and bridge, and a new saddle and pins.

As expected the guitar lives up to its reputation.  The sound is balanced across the spectrum, with rich tonal nuances when fingerpicked, but can really put out volume when pushed with a pick.

Comes with its very likely original Lifton hard case in very good condition and replaced handle.
