C.F. Martin D-28 1971 | $2950 | (v2510) Appearing in the Martin catalogs since the 1930s, the D-28 has emerged as the king of the bluegrass flattop guitars. And for good reason: it's big, powerful and iconic with a ring that can cut through the din of other instruments and be heard. One of the few models never dropped from the Martin lineup.
The back and sides are choice, straight-grained Indian rosewood. The top is sitka spruce with multiple b/w/b purfling and binding. The bridge and fingerboard are ebony. The neck is mahogany with a square bar truss rod and the traditional 'D' volute carved in the neck at the neck/headstock juncture. The tuners are enclosed Grovers.
The body measures 15 5/8" across at the lower bout. Scale length is 25 1/8". The neck measures 1 11/16 across at the nut and string spacing is 2 3/16" at the saddle. Action is set and 4 & 6/64".
The guitar appears all original including tuners, nut and pins. We detected no prior repairs. We recently: reset the neck; reglued the bridge; reglued the pickguard; leveled and dressed the frets; glued a small side impact ding. There are no top cracks. It's evident that the guitar was played; there is some finish wear on the back of the neck, slight divots in the frets, pick wear; check lines on the back of the headstock; and sundry nicks and dings from age and use. Check pictures for details.
The action is very comfortable, and strung with 11-52 bronze strings the guitar plays easily and exhibits the coveted dreadnaught ring .. the sound of American Bluegrass .. but when fingerpicked it's quite expressive.
Comes with a hard case.
